Fox in the Padel Court

Maya's palms were sweating as she leaned against the chain-link fence, watching Tyler from across the padel court. He was laughing with his friends, effortlessly swinging his racquet like he owned the place.

"Dude, you're being so obvious," Chloe whispered, elbowing her.

Maya's cat, Luna, rubbed against her legs, purring like she knew exactly what was going on. The stray had adopted her three months ago, showing up at her bedroom window every evening like clockwork.

Tyler glanced over. Maya's heart did that stupid fluttery thing. She tried to act cool, leaning against the fence like she hadn't been staring at him for twenty minutes.

"Hey," he said, walking over. "You watching the game?"

"Uh, yeah," Maya managed. "My friend's playing."

"Who?"

Maya's mind went blank. "Um... Sarah?"

"Weird, I don't know a Sarah," Tyler said, but he was smiling. "You play padel?"

"No, I'm more of a baseball person," Maya said, then immediately regretted it. She knew nothing about baseball.

"That's cool," Tyler said. "I used to play baseball before I switched to padel."

The words slipped out: "You should teach me sometime."

What?! Since when was she bold?

Tyler's smile got wider. "Yeah? I could do that. Here." He held out his phone. "Put your number in."

Her fingers shook as she typed. When she looked up, Chloe gave her a thumbs-up from behind Tyler's back.

That night, Luna jumped onto her windowsill. Maya texted Tyler, her palms sweaty again, then pressed send before she could overthink it.

She'd always felt like the quiet one, the background character in everyone else's story. But maybe that was changing. Maybe she was ready to be the fox—clever, adaptable, unexpectedly bold.

Her phone buzzed. Tyler.

Maya grinned. Game on.
