Fox in the Mirror

Maya stared at her reflection, her fingers yanking at the frizzy mess that had betrayed her again. The box promised "fiery fox copper" but delivered more "stray dog orange." Perfect timing—tonight was Jake's party, the social event of freshman year.

Her phone buzzed. Chloe: "u coming?? dont make me go alone 😭"

Maya groaned. Chloe was her oldest friend, the kind who'd text her crush's entire analysis back to front instead of just sending "ask him out." But lately, Maya felt like the side character in Chloe's main-character energy. Chloe's hair always fell perfectly—those effortless waves that said "I woke up like this" while actually meaning "I spent forty minutes with a curling iron."

"on my way," Maya typed back, then grabbed her beanie. If she was going to look like a Fox's morning after a rainstorm, she'd at least own it.

The party was already chaotic. Someone's bluetooth speaker blasted that song everyone pretended to hate but secretly vibed to. Maya spotted Chloe immediately, holding court near the snack table like she hosted these things weekly.

"YOU CAME!" Chloe launched herself at Maya. "I need—" she lowered her voice "—backup. Tyler's here and I think he's about to ask—"

"Ask what?"

"You know!" Chloe practically vibrated. "And I can't—my hair, I straightened it wrong and it's—"

Maya looked. Chloe's hair was slightly asymmetrical.

"Literally no one notices but you."

"You sound like my mom."

"I sound like your friend who just wants you to chill."

Across the room, Tyler caught Chloe's eye and did that awkward half-wave thing. Chloe's face turned the color of Maya's failed hair dye experiment.

"Okay, new plan," Maya said, grabbing Chloe's hand. "We go over there, you act normal, and if he doesn't say anything interesting in three minutes, we bounce."

"But my hair—"

"Looks fine. Trust me, I know hair disasters. I'm literally a fox today."

Chloe finally laughed. "You called it!"

Tyler approached, nervous smile plastered on. "Hey, I like your hair," he told Maya. "Bold choice."

Maya and Chloe exchanged the look—that silent conversation only years of friendship can convey.

"Thanks," Maya said. "My friend here helped me pick it."

"Actually," Chloe said, confidence returning, "I told her not to do it. But you know Maya—she never listens."

And for the first time all night, Maya didn't feel like the side character at all.
