Fox in the Henhouse

The message appeared on Mara's iphone while she sat poolside, nursing a gin and tonic that had gone watery in the heat. Her husband's phone buzzed on the lounge chair beside her — a text from someone named 'K' with a fox emoji: 'Can't stop thinking about last night.'

Mara stared at the swimming pool's turquoise surface, where her boss's daughter practiced laps, the rhythmic splashes somehow obscene. On the patio television, a baseball game droned on — ninth inning, two outs, the announcer's voice rising as a batter swung at something he couldn't see.

Their golden retriever, Barnaby, nudged her hand with his wet nose. He'd been her constant companion through three miscarriages and seven years of fertility treatments. Dan had grown distant somewhere around year four, when the doctor said 'maybe consider adoption' and Dan heard 'maybe consider someone else.'

She thought of the woman she'd seen leaving Dan's office last week — sharp features, clever eyes like a predator assessing prey. A fox in every sense.

'Barnaby,' she whispered, 'what do we do when loyalty meets betrayal?' The dog thumped his tail, choosing the side with the treats.

The patio door slid open. Dan emerged with fresh drinks, his phone now locked in his pocket. 'Everything okay?' he asked, not quite meeting her eyes.

On TV, the batter struck out. The game was over. Mara stood up, dripping water onto the concrete, and realized some endings arrive not with a scream but with the quiet decision to stop swinging at pitches you were never meant to hit.
