Fox in the Henhouse

Maya's reputation had been taking more Ls than a botched TikTok live. Someone was spilling cap about her everywhere - rumors that she'd hooked up with Jake, that she'd cheated on her Spanish final, that she was talking behind her best friend's back. Straight-up bull, but the eighth-grade grapevine didn't care about facts.

Then she found the screenshot. Raven, her so-called friend, had been the source of it all.

"Whatever," Maya whispered to herself, staring at her phone in the bathroom stall. "If they want to treat me like I'm some degen, I'll give them something real to talk about."

Something shifted inside her that day. She stopped trying to be everyone's comfort person. Stopped letting people use her like a doormat. Her older sister called it "entering her villain era," but Maya didn't feel like a villain. She felt like she'd finally learned to move like a fox - sleek, observant, impossible to catch.

She called out the bull when she saw it. Dropped people who didn't recipro her energy. Started carrying herself like someone who knew her worth.

The crazy part? People started respecting her more. The whispers died down when they realized she wasn't playing anymore.

"You're different," Raven said at lunch one day, trying to slide back into her good graces like nothing had happened.

Maya just laughed. "Yeah, I grew up. Crazy what happens when you stop letting people run over you."

She may have lost some followers, but she'd found herself. And somewhere along the way, she'd made real friends - the ones who stuck around when things got messy. The ones who'd never make her choose between being nice and being real.

Funny how sometimes you have to burn down the fake stuff to make room for what actually matters.
