Fox in the Hen House

Maya's heart hammered like she'd been running a marathon instead of just standing outside Jackson's front door. Her first real party. The air smelled like papaya—some fancy candle his mom probably lit—and cheap cologne.

She'd spent two hours getting ready, trying to look effortless. Inside, the bass thumped through her chest. Zombie-eyed sophomores slumped on the couch, phones glowing like they were possessed. Someone bumped into her, slopping red Solo cup contents onto her new white Converse.

"Sorry!" A guy with messy hair grinned. "I'm Chen. You're Mia, right?"

"Maya," she corrected. "And no, I'm not drinking that."

"Smart." He leaned closer. "You know why they call this place the Zoo? Jackson's dad has this taxidermy bear head in the basement. Creepy as hell."

Maya laughed despite herself. Maybe this wouldn't be a total disaster.

Then she saw Harper—queen bee, enemy of Maya's existence for three years—whispering to her minions while staring pointedly at Maya's shoes. The fresh stain looked like she'd stepped in something gross. On purpose.

"Whatever," Maya muttered, turning toward the kitchen for water.

"Hey." Chen appeared again. "Wanna get out of here? There's a fox den in the woods behind the park. My cousin saw kits last week."

Maya hesitated. Leaving meant possibly missing out. But staying meant Harper's version of Russian roulette.

"You're like," Harper's voice cut through, "trying so hard to be different. It's giving... trying too hard."

The words hit harder than Maya expected. Because wasn't that the truth? She WAS trying. Always trying to be someone people would actually see.

Chen waited, no pressure. No judgment.

"Let's go," Maya said.

They slipped out the back door, running past the thumping bass toward somewhere wilder. Somewhere she could just be.

"You know," Chen said as they walked, "foxes are solitary. They don't run in packs. They're okay with being different."

Maya smiled. Maybe that wasn't so bad after all.
