Fox in the Hat

Maya stared at her reflection, horror-struck. The haircut was supposed to be layers. Instead, she looked like a bewildered poodle. Prom was in three days, and she'd be lucky if her hair recovered by graduation.

"It'll grow back," her mom had said cheerfully, as if that helped.

Now Maya sat behind the school building during lunch, her hat pulled low. A beanie in July. So smooth.

"Nice hat,"

Maya muttered to herself. "Subtle as a fox."

She'd meant it sarcastically, but then she saw him. An actual fox. A red one, peeking around the dumpster, ears perked like he was judging her life choices. He held something in his mouth—a hot dog bun, obviously stolen from some freshman's lunch.

The fox locked eyes with her. And then—get this—he winked. Actually winked. Like he knew her hair disaster was the least of her problems.

Maya found herself laughing. A real laugh, not the fake one she'd been using all week when people asked what happened. The fox trotted closer, fearless, dropping his stolen bun at her feet like an offering.

"Dude," she whispered. "We're both out here hiding."

The fox tilted his head, then sneezed.

A year ago, Maya would've died of embarrassment being seen hiding behind a dumpster, talking to wildlife. But now? She pulled off her hat. The breeze hit her disastrous hair, and she didn't even care. The fox blinked at her, unimpressed.

"You know what?" she told him. "My hair looks like a disaster, but at least I didn't have to steal lunch."

The fox made a sound like a laugh, then grabbed his bun and vanished. Maya sat there for another minute, then walked back inside with her hat still in her hand. Let them stare. At least her hair had personality now.

Besides, she'd made friends with a fox. How many people could say that?
