Fox in the Hallways

Emma stood outside Northwood High, hands shaking. Her hair was a disaster—frizzy curls exploding everywhere after she'd spent forty-five minutes trying to tame it. Being the new kid sucked, especially junior year when everyone already had their friend groups locked down tight.

Inside the hallway, a massive crowd gathered around something. Emma squeezed through to see a girl named Chloe—some junior who apparently ruled this school—dressed like a literal fox for spirit week. Ears, tail, the whole deal. Emma felt like a bull in a china shop just standing there.

"You gonna move or what?" someone snapped behind her.

"Sorry, I—" Emma started, but Chloe locked eyes with her from across the circle.

"Fresh face!" Chloe called out, gesturing Emma closer. "Come here, foxy new girl. Don't be shy."

Emma froze. Everyone was watching. She felt like she might throw up.

"I said come here," Chloe repeated, walking over. "I'm Chloe. This costume's ridiculous, but apparently I'm 'too committed to the bit' to back down now."

"Emma," she squeaked. "Your outfit is... actually kind of iconic."

Chloe grinned, and Emma realized she wasn't the intimidating mean girl everyone had warned her about. "Thanks! The ears keep sliding off. I'm trying to look like a fox but I feel more like a confused raccoon."

A guy named Alex leaned against the lockers nearby. "You're not fooling anyone, Chloe. We all know you're secretly a cat person."

"Excuse me?! Foxes are way cooler," Chloe shot back. "Foxes are clever and mysterious. Cats are just... cats."

"Your Instagram is ninety percent cats," Alex pointed out.

"That's called appreciating excellence," Chloe said, flipping her imaginary tail. She turned back to Emma. "Ignore him. What's your deal, new girl?"

"I—uh—I don't really have a deal," Emma admitted. "I'm just trying not to bear the weight of being 'the new kid' and embarrass myself before lunch."

"We've all been there," Chloe said, surprisingly gentle. "Hey Alex, what was your first day like?"

"I tripped over my own feet in the cafeteria and somehow knocked over three trays," Alex said. "Bull-dozed through lunch like a boss."

Emma laughed despite herself.

"See? Everyone survives. You're gonna be fine," Chloe said. "Plus, your hair is goals. I've been trying to get volume like that for years."

Emma's hands went to her curls self-consciously. "You think?"

"Don't fish for compliments," Chloe said, but she was smiling. "Come on. Let me show you around before you get lost and we have to send out a search party. We can discuss which animal spirit represents my soul properly."

As Chloe walked her to class, Emma felt something shift. Maybe high school wouldn't be so terrifying after all. Maybe, just maybe, she'd found her people.

Or at the very least, she'd found someone who appreciated good hair.
