Fox in the Hallway Pyramid

Marcus adjusted his vintage trucker hat in the bathroom mirror, trying to look like he didn't care. But he totally cared. Freshman year at Northwood High was basically a pyramid scheme of popularity, and Marcus was definitely at the bottom paying into the system.

"You good, bro?" His best friend Amir appeared beside him, checking his own reflection. Amir had been acting weird lately, skipping lunch to sit with the juniors by the gym doors.

"Yeah," Marcus lied, tilting his hat. "Just thinking about how Mr. Harrison's gonna fail us on that history project."

"About that..." Amir rubbed his neck. "Tyler said if I help him with his TikTok edits, he'll put in a good word for me with—"

"With who? The pyramid club?" Marcus snapped, then immediately regretted it.

That afternoon, Marcus took the long way home through the wooded trail behind the school. That's when he saw it—a real fox, orange-red against the dying grass. It froze, watching him with these insane intelligent eyes, like it knew something Marcus didn't.

His phone buzzed. Amir: "sorry about today. wanna come over? we can order food."

Marcus stared at the text, then back at the fox. The creature twitched its ears and vanished into the trees, smooth and effortless, like it belonged everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

Maybe that was the whole problem. Marcus had been trying to climb someone else's pyramid.

He texted Amir back: "yeah. bring extra hot sauce."

When Amir opened his door, Marcus wasn't wearing his hat anymore. "So about those TikTok edits," Marcus said. "Teach me."

Amir grinned. "Finally. Your editing game is weak, bro."

They spent the night making the worst edits ever, laughing until their sides hurt. The pyramid could wait. Marcus had his fox moment—he'd stopped trying to be something he wasn't. And sometimes? That was better than making it to the top.
