Fox in the Hallway

Maya's hair was a disaster—frizzy from the humidity, falling out of her supposedly 'effortless' bun. She smoothed her palm over her head for the tenth time, checking her reflection in the gymnasium glass doors. Tonight was the Winter Formal, and she'd promised herself she'd actually go this year.

"You good?" asked Jordan, leaning against the wall beside her. He was wearing that stupid beanie hat he never took off, even indoors. The one with the tiny pompom that bounced when he talked.

"Just nervous," Maya admitted. "Everyone's gonna be taking those TikTok-worthy pics and I'll be over here fighting with my hair all night."

"You're literally the most chill person I know," Jordan said, cracking a grin. "Besides, you're here. That's half the battle."

Maya snorted. "Easy for you to say. You're not the one whose mom spent forty-five minutes lecturing about 'seizing the moment' before dropping you off."

"My mom just yelled 'don't do anything I wouldn't do' out the car window and sped off," Jordan laughed. "Classic."

They both jumped when a sudden shout echoed down the hallway. "YO, SECURITY'S RUNNING THIS WAY!"

A sophomore came sprinting past them, clutching something under his jacket like he'd just robbed a bank. Two security guards huffed behind him, their radios crackling.

"What was that about?" Maya asked, watching them disappear around the corner.

"No clue," Jordan said, but his eyes were dancing with mischief. "Wanna investigate?"

Maya hesitated. The old her would've stayed put, safe and predictable. But tonight was supposed to be different. She nodded.

They crept toward the side exit where the kid had bolted. The door clicked shut behind them, and Maya followed Jordan into the cool night air. The sophomore was there, crouched beside a rusted metal shed, petting something—

A fox. A real one, with reddish-gold fur and alert ears that swiveled toward them.

"Dude," Jordan whispered. "Is that...?"

"He's been living behind the shed for weeks," the kid said, not looking up. "I come out here with snacks. He's super chill, I swear."

The fox tilted its head, regarding them with intelligent amber eyes. Maya's heart raced—not from fear, but from the sheer impossibility of this moment. A real fox. At her high school. Behind the gym where her classmates were dancing to songs she'd heard on repeat all week.

"Can I...?" Maya started, taking a step forward.

"Yeah," the kid said. "He likes people. Just don't make sudden moves."

Maya crouched down, extending her palm slowly. The fox sniffed the air, then padded forward. His whiskers tickled her skin as he took a piece of cracker from her hand. His fur was softer than she'd imagined.

"No way," Jordan breathed, pulling out his phone. "Maya, look at this—"

He snapped a photo just as the fox's ears swiveled toward the gym. Music thudded faintly through the walls.

"We should head back," Maya said reluctantly. "Before someone realizes we're gone."

But as they slipped back inside, Jordan showed her the photo. Maya, crouched in her formal dress, hand extended to a wild fox who looked like he belonged in a fairy tale. Her hair was still messy. She wasn't posing or trying to look perfect. She was just... there.

"Send that to me," she said.

"Already did," Jordan grinned. "You're welcome, by the way. For the most legendary night ever."

Maya looked back toward the door one last time. Her formal night hadn't gone according to plan. But as she followed Jordan toward the gym, smiling despite her frizzy hair and zero preparations, she decided that maybe the best moments were the ones you never saw coming.
