Fox in the Halls

Maya's hair was supposed to be the problem. That's what she thought when she showed up to school with the accidental dip-dye disaster—sunrise orange melting into midnight purple. She expected whispers, maybe some solid side-eye from the clique that treated the cafeteria like their personal runway. Instead, she became invisible.

Or that's what she believed until Chase, the quiet kid who always sat by the emergency exit, slid into the seat beside her at lunch.

"You're like a fox," he said, not looking up from his sketchbook. "Sneaky vibes."

Maya blinked. "Thanks?"

"No, literally." He tilted his sketch toward her. A fox stared back in charcoal. "I've been watching how you move through the halls. Always ducking into side corridors before third period. What's that about?"

Heat crept up her neck. Was she that obvious? She'd been taking the long way around to avoid the pyramid—her name for the social hierarchy that seemed to tower over everything, with queen bee Jordan at the top. Maya had crashed and burned at the bottom after last year's incident.

"I'm not trying to be mysterious," she muttered, pushing food around her tray.

Chase's eyes twinkled. "Could've fooled me. I've been playing spy for weeks now, trying to figure out your deal. The colorful hair? The disappearing acts?" He leaned closer, voice dropping. "What if we shake things up?"

Maya's pulse kicked up. "Shake what up?"

"The pyramid." Chase grinned, all mischievous energy now. "You've got the fox aesthetic down. I've got the plans. What if we became the ones everyone's watching instead of hiding from?"

Her first instinct was to bolt. Then she looked at her orange-tipped fingers and thought: invisible was getting old anyway.

"I'm listening."
