Fox in the Garden

Marcus watched his wife Elena smash the padel ball against the glass wall, her movements sharp and violent. She'd been playing with Carlos for weeks now, their games stretching longer each afternoon.

He sat by the club's garden pond, where golden khi darted through murky water. Their aging golden retriever, Barnaby, rested his head on Marcus's knee, his breathing ragged. The dog had been with them twelve years, through the wedding, the promotions, the miscarriage they never spoke about.

A fox emerged from the clubhouse hedges—sleek russet fur, eyes watching Elena's game. Not Carlos. The new tennis instructor, Sofia, whose laughter carried across the court, who'd left her towel in Elena's locker last Tuesday.

Marcus's phone lit up: a text from Sofia. 'Same place tomorrow?'

The goldfish broke the surface, gasping. Barnaby whined, pressing his nose into Marcus's palm. On court, Elena laughed at something Carlos said, her head tilted back, throat exposed.

The fox vanished into the hydrangeas. Marcus realized with cold clarity that he'd been watching the wrong predator all along. His wife's infidelity wasn't the betrayal—it was that she'd hidden it in plain sight while he sat by this artificial pond, watching goldfish circle in water too shallow to drown in.

"Play with me," Elena called from the court, paddle raised. "Carlos is tired."

Marcus stood slowly, his joints popping. The dog struggled to rise. The goldfish sank back into darkness. Something fundamental had shifted beneath the surface, and like water, it would find its level.
