Fox in the Floodlights

Maya stood at the edge of the pool, clutching her red solo cup like it was a lifeline. The house party was everything she'd imagined and nothing she'd expected—loud music, flashing lights, and way too many people who seemed to know exactly what they were doing.

Her best friend Priya had already disappeared into the crowd, probably off flirting with that junior from the baseball team. Meanwhile, Maya was stuck watching the legendary "Fox"—that's what everyone called the guy with the messy dark hair and the leather jacket who sat on the diving board like he owned the place.

"You gonna stand there all night or actually get in the water?" Fox called out, startling her so badly she almost dropped her drink.

Maya's face burned. "I'm good. Just... you know."

"Awkwardly lurking? Same." He hopped down from the diving board, water dripping from his swim trunks. "I'm Luka, by the way. The Fox thing is stupid, but people love their nicknames."

He sat beside her on the pool edge, and suddenly her heart was doing that annoying fluttery thing. "Maya," she managed. "First party. Kinda terrified."

Luka laughed. "Same. This is my first time hanging out with this crowd. They're kinda... much."

A scream pierced the music as someone cat-called across the pool. Maya flinched, but Luka just rolled his eyes. "Ignore them. They're trying way too hard."

A sleek gray cat appeared from nowhere, winding between Maya's legs and purring like a tiny motorboat. "Oh my god, hello," she whispered, bending to pet it.

"That's George," Luka said. "He's the real host here. Pretty sure he owns all of us."

George the cat decided Maya's lap was his new throne, and she couldn't help it—she laughed. For the first time all night, her shoulders actually relaxed.

"See?" Luka bumped her shoulder with his. "You're already fitting in. George has excellent taste in people."

Someone splashed water at them, and before Maya could react, Luka had scooped her up and jumped into the pool with her.

"FOX!" she shrieked, surfacing sputtering and laughing.

"Payback," he grinned, treading water beside her. "Besides, now you're officially part of the party."

Later, as they sat on the pool edge dripping wet while George the cat licked water from Maya's knee, she realized something: sometimes the best moments happen when you stop overthinking and just let yourself get pulled into the deep end. Literally.
