Fox in the Flashlight

Maya's iphone buzzed in her sweatshirt pocket, exactly where she'd hidden it from her mom. Family reunions were the actual worst—second cousins twice removed asking about college plans while she tried to look busy. The group chat was blowing up. Everyone was at Tyler's party. Everyone except her.

"Maya, come say hello to your auntie!"

She slipped out the back door, fake phone call ready. But instead of fake-calling, she found herself walking toward the woods behind her grandmother's Florida house. Palm trees silhouetted against the moon, fronds whispering in the breeze. Her palms were sweating—nerves, or the humidity, or both.

She'd just reach the edge of the treeline. Just a peek. Tyler had posted that stupid sunset caption again: "golden hour with golden people."

The flashlight from her phone cut through the darkness. She stepped over palmetto fronds, something rustled nearby, and—

A fox.

It stood there, real as anything, amber coat catching the light. Not red like storybooks. Gold, like Tyler's caption. Their eyes locked for three seconds that felt like a whole lifetime. Then it melted back into the shadows like it had never existed.

Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. She'd never seen anything so wild, so free, so completely unbothered by whether it was invited to the right parties.

Her phone buzzed again. Another notification. Another someone living their "best life" without her.

She turned the flashlight off. Stood there in the dark, listening to the palms rustle overhead. The fox was out there somewhere, running through the night on its own terms.

For the first time all evening, Maya didn't feel like she was missing out.

She walked back to the house, palms no longer sweating, phone still in her pocket. Some things were better than a party. Some things didn't need to be posted to be real.
