Fox in the Firelight
The party was already lit when Maya arrived, palm trees swaying against the purple sunset like they were trying to escape too. Her cousin Jasmine had dragged her here, promising "just chill vibes" but Maya's social battery was already at 3%.
"You good?" Jasmine asked, handing her a sparkling water.
"Yeah, just... absorbing the atmosphere." Maya needed a friend right now, not another cousin who'd disappear the second someone hot walked by.
True to form, Jasmine spotted a fox-haired guy by the bonfire and bounced. "Be back!"
Maya ended up on a log beside Levi, who'd been her lab partner all sophomore year but they'd never really spoken outside the existential dread of AP Chem.
"Rough night?" he asked, passing her a s'mores kit.
"Just standard social anxiety, nothing to see here."
He laughed, and she noticed his hands—calloused from climbing, with a tiny scar across his left palm. "You want to hear something wild? My nana reads palms. She taught me."
"You're messing with me."
"Hold out your hand. I swear I'm not trolling."
Maya extended her hand, heart doing something stupid. His fingers traced her life line, and she felt like she was bearing her entire soul on a beach log.
"You're gonna do something important," he said softly. "Something creative. And you're gonna be really happy, but first you gotta stop overthinking everything."
Maya pulled her hand back, feeling seen in a way that terrified her. "What's your tell, then?"
He smiled, and she realized how much she'd missed—how Levi had always been there, quietly steady through every group project drama, every friend group shift.
"My tell?" He poked his chest with a marshmallow. "I've been waiting for the right moment to talk to you all year."
The fox-haired guy turned up the music, but Maya couldn't look away from Levi's firelit face.
"Well," she said, "you definitely nailed the dramatic timing."
Some bears carry weight alone. Others find someone who helps carry it. As the bonfire crackled under stars, Maya decided she was done being the former.
