Fox in the Deep End
Zoey's stomach did backflips as she stared at the pool. Sophomore year swim test. In T-minus seven days. Problem was, Zoey's swimming style was more "thrashing emergency" than "graceful athlete."
"You're not actually doing the test, right?" Jess said, sliding onto the bleacher next to her. "Just fake a cramp like I did. Worked like a charm."
"My mom says I have to pass or I can't go to Coachella," Zoey groaned, dropping her head into her hands. "She's not playing."
"That's literally torture."
Meanwhile, across the pool, Marcus "the Bull" Rodriguez was holding court. He'd already qualified for varsity, of course, because Marcus was annoyingly good at everything. He was doing laps with that easy, powerful stroke that made swimming look like breathing, while his friends cheered like he'd just won Olympic gold.
"He's such a showoff," Jess muttered. "Last week he literally asked Mr. Henderson if he could 'demonstrate proper form' for our class. Who does that?"
Zoey rolled her eyes. "His confidence is giving me a headache."
"You know what you need?" Jess's eyes lit up. "Private lessons. My cousin works at the YMCA – she can get you in after hours. No audience, no pressure."
Three sessions later, Zoey could actually swim without feeling like she was drowning. Slowly, but definitely swimming. On the final evening, she managed a full lap without stopping, and her instructor high-fived her.
"You got this," she said. "Remember what I told you – swimming's mostly mental."
Test day arrived. Zoey's hands wouldn't stop shaking as she lined up beside the pool. Marcus was already there, stretching dramatically, like the world's most annoying Olympian.
"Ready to get smoked, fox?" he smirked, using that stupid nickname he'd given her freshman year when she'd talked her way out of trouble for the third time.
"Watch me, Bull," Zoey shot back, surprised by her own confidence.
The whistle blew.
Zoey dove in, and suddenly everything clicked. Her strokes were smooth. Her breathing was actually working. She wasn't fast – definitely not Marcus fast – but she was swimming. Real swimming. Like, respectable swimming.
She touched the wall, gasping, and looked up. Marcus was already finished, watching her with this weird expression. Not mocking. Just... watching.
"Not bad, fox," he said, almost quiet. "Actually kinda impressed."
Zoey's face burned, but not from embarrassment this time. She'd done it. The fox had figured out how to swim with the bulls and survived – maybe even thrived.
"Coachella," she whispered to herself, grinning. "Here I come."
