Fox in the Deep End

Maya stood at the edge of the community pool, clutching her towel like a shield. The August heat wave had turned her neighborhood into an oven, but the thought of swimming in front of everyone made her stomach do backflips.

"You coming in or what?" called Jessie, her best friend since kindergarten. Jessie was already cannonballing into the deep end, making waves that crashed against the concrete edges. That was the thing about friendship sometimes — Jessie was all confidence and splash, while Maya was still stuck on the deck, overthinking everything.

"I'm good," Maya mumbled, even though sweat was dripping down her back.

That's when she saw it: a flash of copper near the chain-link fence. A fox, sleek and impossibly wild, padding along the perimeter like it owned the place. The fox paused, amber eyes locking with hers, and Maya felt something shift. This creature didn't care who was watching. It just was.

The fox trotted toward the pool's edge where a group of popular kids hung out. Without hesitation, it dipped its front paws in the water, tongue lolling out like it was laughing at something only it understood. The popular kids froze. Someone whispered, "Is that... actually so aesthetic though?"

Maya's phone buzzed. Her mom: "Did you make it to the pool party? Have fun!"

The fox shook water from its paws and trotted back toward the woods, tail flicking like whatever. Something about its careless energy snapped something loose in Maya's chest. This random woodland creature had more swagger than she'd had in months.

Maya dropped her towel on the bench.

"YO MAYA," Jessie yelled. "FINALLY."

She dove in, chlorine stinging her eyes, and came up sputtering while Jessie laughed so hard she snorted. The fox was long gone, but Maya felt weirdly brave, like she'd absorbed some of its wild energy.

"Tomorrow," Maya said, wiping water from her face, "we're doing laps before this opens. No audience. Just us."

"Bet," Jessie said. "But first — watch this form." Another cannonball, another wave.

Maya floated on her back, staring up at the perfect blue sky, finally just... swimming.
