Fox in the Deep End

Maddie's new haircut made everyone stare. Fire-engine orange, the kind of color that screamed I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK even though she cared too much. "Little fox," her mom had called her that morning, ruffling the chopped strands.

The nickname stuck. By third period, half the school was whispering about the girl with fox-orange hair who'd clearly lost it over summer break.

"You look... intense," said Kai, sliding onto the cafeteria bench beside her. They'd been sort-of friends since seventh grade, the kind who shared homework answers but not secrets.

"Intense," Maddie repeated. "That's what people say when they mean you're trying too hard."

"Nah," Kai said, grabbing an apple from her tray. "It's bold. Like you're finally letting people see you instead of some filtered version."

Maddie felt something loosen in her chest. "Maybe."

The invitation came on Friday: pool party at Jessica's house. The social event of the season, and Maddie's new hair would be on full display. She almost said no. Almost.

"You coming?" Kai asked in the hallway.

"I wasn't going to."

"Come on. Swimming in jeans is humiliating, sure, but at least you'll make an entrance."

"You're the worst."

"I know. Pick you up at seven?"

The pool was already chaos when they arrived—bodies everywhere, music vibrating through the water. Maddie stood at the edge, suddenly hyper-aware of her fox-bright hair against everyone else's perfectly normal.

Then Kai jumped in, clothes and all, surfacing with a dramatic splash. "The water's fine, little fox!" they yelled, grinning.

Something shifted. Maddie kicked off her sandals and dove.

The water swallowed her whole—cool and bottomless and perfect. For a moment she just existed, no hair color, no whispers, no trying too hard. When she surfaced, gasping, Kai was right there.

"See?" Kai said. "Not so scary."

Maddie slicked back her orange hair, water streaming down her face. "Yeah," she said, really smiling now. "I think I'm done being afraid of the deep end."

Jessica called her name, waving her over to the group by the diving board. Maddie swam toward them, toward whatever happened next, and for the first time in forever, she wasn't nervous. Just ready.
