Fox in the Chlorinated Water

The corporate retreat's pool shimmered like liquid diamonds under the desert stars. Elena stood at its edge, nursing her third glass of champagne, watching Marcus surface from the water. He'd been the one to suggest this weekend getaway—just the two senior VPs and their teams, ostensibly for bonding. But Elena had noticed things lately. Little things.

Marcus climbed out, water cascading down his runner's frame. He caught her eye and smiled—that practiced, charming smile that had won over half the board. He moved like a fox through the undergrowth, all sleek grace and calculated movements. Nothing about him was accidental.

"They're lovely people, your colleagues," he said, wrapping himself in a towel. "Sharp. Very sharp."

Elena's stomach tightened. "Marcus, the R&D files from the Mercury project—who else have you shown them to?"

The smile didn't waver, but something flickered behind his eyes. "Why do you ask?"

"Because I'm not an idiot." She set down her glass. "I know you've been meeting with Apex Solutions. I know about the job offer. And I know you've been funneling them our proprietary data."

The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken history. Three years of marriage. Two years of working side by side. All of it reduced to this moment by a chlorinated pool in the middle of nowhere.

"They offered me double," he said finally, his voice stripped of its usual warmth. "Elena, we could start over. Both of us."

"You're not a spy, Marcus," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're just someone who forgot how to build instead of take."

She walked back to the hotel alone, the sound of the pool's water lapping against its edges echoing behind her like something breaking. Some secrets, she realized, don't shatter—they just erode, drop by drop, until there's nothing left but the hollow space where trust used to be.
