Fox in the Bull's Arena

The snapback hat wasn't even mine. I'd swiped it from my brother's room because my hair was doing that weird flippy thing that happens when it's too long and I refuse to cut it because Maya thinks it looks good. Or she did, until she started hanging out with Tyler's crew.

I'm at this house party—my first real one—and I'm plastered against the wall like wallpaper. The bass is thumping in my chest and everyone's dancing with that loose confidence I've never mastered. I'm about to bail when Tyler shoulders through the crowd like a bull in a china shop, all broad shoulders and that entitled energy that makes everyone part like he's Moses or something.

"Yo, New Kid," he announces, because apparently three months at Lincoln High still equals "new." "Truth or dare. Your pick."

The room goes quiet. That weird, tense quiet where you can feel everyone holding their breath. Maya's watching from across the room, expression unreadable, and suddenly I'm tired of being the quiet one. The safe one. The one who never does anything wrong.

"Dare," I say, and my voice doesn't even shake.

Tyler's grin is predatory. "I dare you to kiss Maya."

The room erupts. Whoops and "ooohs" and someone yells "SHIP IT" because teenagers are literally the worst. Maya's face flames crimson and I can see Tyler waiting for me to fold, to apologize, to back down like I always do.

Instead, I pull the snapback lower over my eyes, channeling that fox energy I read about in biology—the clever one, the adaptable one, the one that survives because it's smart enough to know when to run and when to stand its ground.

"Nah," I say, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Not interested in being your entertainment."

The silence that follows is different. Heavy. Loaded.

"What?" Tyler takes a step closer, chest puffed out.

"I said I'm not doing your dare." I shoulder past him, surprisingly solid for someone who's never been in a fight in his life. "And FYI? If you actually liked Maya, you wouldn't put her on blast like that."

I'm out the door before anyone can react, heart hammering against my ribs like it's trying to escape. Behind me, through the closing door, I hear someone start clapping. Then someone else.

Maya catches up to me at the corner, breathless.

"That was..." She searches for the word. "Actually kind of badass."

I adjust the stolen hat, finally feeling like I'm wearing it instead of it wearing me. "Yeah?"

"Yeah." She grins, and it's real this time. "You want to get out of here? My brother's got this fox hybrid down at the rescue ranch. We could go see it."

My phone buzzes—ten texts from my brother asking where his hat is. I ignore every single one.

"Absolutely."
