Fox in the Bathroom Mirror
Maya's hands shook as she applied the orange hair dye. The bathroom mirror showed her transformation—brown hair becoming this wild, foxy copper. Two hours until Jordan's party. Two hours until she'd finally stop being Invisible Maya and become someone interesting.
The hat on the counter mocked her. Jordan's text had said dress fancy, but Maya knew how these parties went. The cool kids would look effortless. Maya would look like she was trying too hard.
She rinsed her hair. Orange. Bright, unmistakable orange.
"Perfect," she whispered, though her stomach twisted.
Her phone buzzed. Sasha: u coming?? Maya's best friend since kindergarten, the one person who never made her feel small. Sasha would get it.
Outside, the October wind bit at Maya's ears as she walked to Jordan's. The hat stayed in her pocket—maybe she'd wear it, maybe not. Maybe she'd just own this ridiculous orange hair and see what happened.
The party was already chaos when she arrived. Music thumping, people laughing, red cups everywhere. Maya squeezed through the doorway, heart pounding.
Someone whistled. "Fox alert."
Her face burned. Was that a compliment? An insult? She couldn't tell.
Sasha found her immediately, eyes widening. "Maya?! What did you DO?!"
"I wanted to be noticeable," Maya mumbled. "Instead of just... background."
Sasha grabbed her hand. "You were never background. Come on."
They ended up on the back porch, away from the noise. Maya leaned against the railing, the cold metal seeping through her sweater.
"My hair looks ridiculous, doesn't it?"
"It looks like you're brave," Sasha said. "Which is more than I can say."
A rustle in the bushes. Both girls jumped.
An actual fox emerged—orange fur, pointed face, watching them with bright eyes. For a moment, nobody moved.
Then the fox darted away, quick as courage.
"Did you see that?" Maya breathed.
"Yeah." Sasha grinned. "Guess orange hair runs in the neighborhood."
Maya laughed—really laughed—for the first time all night. The hat stayed in her pocket. The fox in the mirror wasn't so scary after all.
