Fox in a Snapback

Maya pulled her vintage snapback low over her eyes, creating the perfect shield between her and the hallway chaos. The hat was her armor—stupid, maybe, but it smelled like safety and gave her three inches of invisible space.

"You good?" Sam asked, nodding toward the bathroom stall where she'd been conducting her morning recon.

"Yeah, all good," Maya lied, channeling her inner goldfish—fake it till you make it, even when you feel like you're drowning in three inches of shallow water. She'd been spying on Lily's squad since September, cataloging their outfits and slang like it was actual homework. Pathetic? Maybe. Necessary when you're the weird quiet kid who somehow became friends with the most popular girl's ex-boyfriend? Definitely.

The cafeteria smelled like Tuesday disappointment. Maya navigated toward her usual corner spot when something made her stop. Lily at her usual table, papaya-colored manicured nails tapping against her phone, laughing with that head-tilted-back effortless energy that made everything look easy. Maya's pet goldfish, Neptune, would've been proud—she'd finally mastered the art of being unnoticeable in plain sight.

Then Lily caught her eye. Not like, oh-sorry-I-bumped-into-you eye contact. Like, actual acknowledgment.

"Nice hat," Lily said, sliding into the seat across from her like she belonged there. "Vintage Supreme? My brother used to have one just like it."

Maya's brain short-circuited. "Oh, uh, yeah. It's my—"

"Dad's?" Lily finished, grinning. "Yeah, figured. You've got that whole thrift-store aesthetic going on. It's cute. Not trying to be a copycat like everyone else."

Wait—cute? The girl who'd been ignoring her existence for three years just called her cute?

"So," Lily continued, leaning in like she was about to drop classified intel, "I've noticed you watching our table during lunch. Not in a creepy way!" She added quickly, catching Maya's panicked expression. "More like... observant. You notice things. Details. That's kinda rare, honestly."

Maya felt her face heating up. "Oh, I was just—"

"Spying?" Lily winked. "Relax, I'm messing with you. But seriously, I need someone with eyes like yours. Fox-like, you know? Cunning. My friends are... oblivious. I need someone who can help me figure out if Tyler's actually cheating or if I'm just being paranoid, and you seem like you notice stuff."

She slid her phone across the table. On the screen: a blurry photo of Tyler with some girl at what looked like a party, his hand on her waist.

"What do you think?" Lily asked. "You've got the hat, the vibe—give it to me straight."

Maya stared at the photo, then at Lily, who was actually waiting for her opinion like it mattered. Like SHE mattered. The goldfish in her head stopped swimming in circles and started paying attention.

"That's not his ex," Maya said, surprising herself with how steady her voice came out. "That's his cousin from Sacramento. She was at his birthday party last month—I remember because she was wearing that same dress."

Lily's jaw dropped. "Wait, seriously? I literally almost dumped him over this."

"Yeah, no. It's innocent."

Lily slumped back against her chair, letting out this huge breath. "Okay, you're literally my new favorite person. We're getting papaya smoothies after school to celebrate. My treat. No spy work required—just hang out."

As Maya watched Lily slide her phone back into her pocket, something shifted. The hat still smelled like safety, but for the first time, Maya didn't feel like she needed it. She was just a girl who noticed things, a little bit fox-like in her own quiet way, and apparently that was enough.
