Fox in a Fedora

Maya had spent two hours flat-ironing her hair and another thirty minutes psyching herself up in the bathroom mirror.

First school dance.

She'd picked this vintage fedora at a thrift store because it made her feel like a different person—someone who wasn't "quiet Maya" who sat in the back of AP Bio. Someone bold.

"You look like a detective," her little sister had scoffed. "Or investigating."

Better than invisible.

Her stomach did somersaults as she approached the gym where bass thumped against the doors. Then she spotted him—Leo, leaning against the wall near the punch bowl, wearing that leather jacket he always did. The one that made his shoulders look broader than they actually were.

A fox. That's what older kids called people like him—sly, cool, untouchable. Not that Maya would ever say that out loud.

She adjusted her hat and marched toward him, reciting the line she'd practiced all afternoon.

"Hey, Leo, nice—"

"Whoa." His eyes widened. "You got a little—"

Maya's heart stopped.

"What?"

He pointed at his own teeth, grimacing. "Right there. Big piece of spinach in your front teeth."

The entire dinner flashed before her eyes. Her mom's "healthy" smoothie. The green leafy stuff she'd insisted was "good for her skin."

Maya's face burned. She'd practiced approaching him all day, and here she was with literal salad in her smile. She should run. Hide. Transfer schools.

Instead, she swallowed. Literally and metaphorically.

"Thanks," she said, turning away to check her reflection in the darkened gym windows. She scrubbed at her teeth until the green smear was gone, then adjusted her hat.

When she turned back, Leo was still there.

"So," he said, "you gonna tell me what you were gonna say?"

Maya blinked. "You're still here?"

Leo shrugged. "I mean, yeah. The spinach was kinda a lot, but..." He grinned. "I like the hat. It's got vibes."

And just like that, quiet Maya disappeared.

"I was going to say nice jacket," she told him, smoothing down the brim of her fedora. "But I'm still deciding if you're cool enough to pull it off."

Leo laughed. "Fair."

"Fox in a fedora," she heard someone whisper as they moved toward the dance floor.

Maya smiled, checking her teeth in her compact mirror just to be sure. Green-free and ready.
