Fox in a Bullseye World

Maya's phone buzzed with five texts in rapid succession. Promposal ideas from Sasha. This was it — the moment she'd been overthinking for weeks.

"You're not seriously considering doing this," Chloe said, sprawled across Maya's bed, scrolling through TikTok. "It's giving cringe. Like, majorly."

"I have to," Maya muttered, clutching her dad's cowboy hat — the one she'd accidentally stolen from his closet last week. "It's perfect. It's ironic. It's... it's me, you know?"

Chloe side-eyed her. "It's giving 'I'm trying too hard.' Just sayin'."

The hat was ridiculous. Maya knew this. But something about wearing it made her feel bold, like she could channel the energy she saw in those confident girls at school — the ones who walked through hallways like they owned them, while Maya spent every lunch period strategically sitting near the vitamin C supplements she'd started carrying for "energy" (actually just anxiety).

"Whatever." Maya grabbed the papaya smoothie she'd made that morning — her latest health kick, another thing Chloe loved to roast her about. "You coming or not?"

"Obviously. Someone needs to document this potential disaster."

The plan was simple: ask Marcus to prom using the bull from the FFA display as a prop. It was funny, it was unexpected, it was so not Maya that maybe — just maybe — it would work.

But when they got to school, the hallway was already crowded. Marcus stood by his locker, surrounded by his lacrosse teammates, laughing at something. Maya froze. The cowboy hat suddenly felt heavy. The papaya smoothie sat in her stomach like a rock.

"You good?" Chloe whispered.

"No," Maya said. "I think I'm gonna —"

"Maya!" Marcus spotted her. "Nice hat."

The whole group turned. Her face burned. This was it. The moment. She could bolt, or she could...

"Thanks," she said, voice shaking. "Hey, so I —"

"Need your vitamin?" someone joked.

"Nah, she needs to ask Marcus to prom already," another guy called.

And then something shifted. Maybe it was the hat. Maybe it was the papaya-fueled courage. But Maya straightened up.

"Actually," she said, "I was gonna ask if you'd go with me. Using the bull outside. Because apparently that's my vibe now."

Silence. Then Marcus grinned.

"Yeah," he said. "Yeah, I would."

Chloe's jaw dropped.

Later, as they walked to class, Chloe finally spoke. "Okay, that was actually iconic. You were lowkey giving fox energy — all quiet and then BAM."

"Fox energy?"

"You know. Sly. Unexpected." Chloe paused. "Also, never wear that hat again. But... you did good."

Maya smiled, adjusting the ridiculous hat. For the first time, she believed it.
