Fox Hat on the Padel Court

Maya pulled the old orange beanie down over her ears, the neon color practically screaming against her all-black outfit. It was her dad's from the 90s, and wearing it felt like armor against the terrifying reality of sophomore year at a new school.

"You coming?" Lena called from the driveway. She held a padel racket like she'd been born with one in her hand. Meanwhile, Maya had literally googled "what is padel" two nights ago.

"Yeah," Maya said, grabbing her borrowed racket. "Let me just—"

A fox darted across the lawn, its russet coat gleaming in the morning light. It paused, amber eyes locking with Maya's, then trotted away like it had somewhere important to be.

"Did you see that?" Maya breathed.

"See what?" Lena was already walking toward her car. "Come on, Jordan's waiting, and he's, like, weirdly competitive about this."

The community padel courts were packed. Jordan leaned against the fence, orange headband matching his Nike shirt, looking annoyingly effortless. Maya felt like she'd stepped into an alternate universe where everyone possessed secret athletic abilities she'd missed out on.

"This is Maya," Lena said. "She's—"

"Wearing the hat," Jordan finished, grinning. "Bold choice. Very... committed to the bit."

Maya's face burned. She reached to pull it off, but Lena caught her wrist. "Don't. It's giving confidence. I respect it."

The fox appeared again—this time near the courts, watching them through the fence. Something about its calm assessment made Maya stand straighter.

"Alright," she said, adjusting the orange hat. "Teach me."

An hour later, Maya was sweating, her racket grip wrong, her coordination questionable—but she'd actually returned three serves. Jordan high-fived her. Lena declared her "chaotically decent." And the fox, if it was still there, would've been impressed by her improvement from "tragic" to "almost functional."

"Same time next week?" Jordan asked, and for the first time since moving here, Maya didn't feel like the new girl. She just felt like someone who played padel badly and owned it.

"Yeah," Maya said, touching the orange hat's edge. "Same time."
