Fox Hat Friday
Maya stood outside the gym, sweating through her palms. This was it — first high school dance, and she was wearing a fox hat. Not a cute little fox ear headband like the cool girls, but a full-on woodland creature hat with ear flaps that her grandmother had sent because "it gets cold in Wisconsin."
Inside, the bass thrummed against her chest. She could see Jordan — her Jordan, the one she'd been crushing on since seventh period algebra — leaning against the wall near the refreshments. Jordan wasn't even dancing. Just existing, effortlessly gorgeous.
"You coming in or what?"
Maya jumped. It was Levi, her lab partner, wearing a suit jacket over a Pokémon shirt.
"I can't go in there like this." Maya gestured to her head. "I look like a furry mascot."
Levi considered this. "You know what? You kind of do. But also, honestly? Nobody's looking at your hat. They're all too busy worrying about themselves."
A group of seniors passed them, laughing. One guy — everyone called him Bear because he was built like a defensive lineman — gave them a nod. "Nice hat, kid."
Maya's face burned. Bear had just noticed her fox hat. This was it. Social suicide complete.
But Bear's friends were laughing with him, not at her. "Yo, where'd you get that? I want one."
"My grandmother," Maya mumbled.
"Tell Gammy we said hey."
They disappeared inside. Maya looked at Levi. "Did that just happen?"
"Welcome to high school," Levi said. "Everyone's weird. Some people just hide it better."
Inside, the air smelled like punch body spray and nervous energy. Jordan was still by the refreshments, and when Maya walked up — fox hat and all — Jordan actually smiled.
"I love your hat," Jordan said. "You have zero chill and I respect that."
Maya's palms were sweating again, but for the first time all night, she didn't care. "Zero chill," she repeated. "That's the plan."
Later, when the slow dances started and she ended up next to Jordan in the awkward swaying crowd, she caught Levi's eye across the room. He gave her a thumbs-up.
The fox hat stayed on all night. Gammy would be proud.
