Fox Hat Friday

Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, her heart hammering like she'd been sprinting instead of just standing there. The fox hat on her head — bright orange with ridiculous ears — felt like both armor and a neon sign flashing LOOK AT ME.

"You're actually wearing it?" Keisha asked, eyes wide. "You said you would, but... damn."

Maya shrugged, trying to channel confidence she absolutely didn't feel. "Fox hat Friday, right? That's the bet."

Every Friday since seventh grade, she'd made excuses. Too hot. Forgot. Hair day. But sophomore year was supposed to be different. New Maya. Brave Maya. Maya who didn't panic every time someone looked at her for too long.

The pool party was chaos — music bumping, people cannonballing, Tyler from history class without a shirt (Maya looked away quickly, face burning). She adjusted her fox ears. They kept flopping forward.

Then she saw him. Lucas. The one who'd made her come up with this whole fox hat nonsense in the first place, back when they'd been lab partners and she'd said something dumb about liking his fox hoodie.

He was laughing with friends by the deep end. His hair was wet. He looked — okay, fine — really good. Maya's stomach did that awful twisting thing.

"Maya!" Lucas called. "You actually did it!"

Before she could react, he was running toward her, grinning. She started backing away instinctively — her go-to move — but then stopped herself. No running. Not tonight.

"The fox ears," he said, stopping in front of her. Drips of pool water ran down his neck. "They're... actually kind of iconic?"

"Iconic?" Maya raised an eyebrow. "That's what we're going with?"

"No, seriously." Lucas reached out and gently adjusted one of her ears. His fingers were wet and cool. "I love that you just — went for it. Most people wouldn't."

Something in Maya's chest loosened. The fear that had been running circles in her head all week suddenly felt... smaller.

"Want to go in?" Lucas nodded toward the pool. "With the hat?"

"The hat stays dry."

"Deal." He grinned. "Race you?"

Maya didn't run. Not yet. But for the first time in forever, she thought she might be ready to start.
