Fox Hat at Midnight Lake
The fox hat was supposed to be ironic. That's what Maya told herself when she bought it at the thrift store, anyway. But standing at the edge of Midnight Lake while everyone else cannonballed into the dark water, the felt ears flopping against her temples felt decidedly un-ironic. They felt like a neon sign flashing 'I'M TRYING TOO HARD.'
"You coming, Maya?" Jake called from the water, slicking wet hair back like some rom-com protagonist. Which, rude.
"Yeah, just... warming up," Maya lied. The truth? She couldn't swim. Not really. Not the way these kids could—throwing themselves off rope swings and floating like they'd been born with gills. Her swimming skills maxed out at 'drown horizontally instead of vertically.'
Then Riley emerged from the water, shaking droplets everywhere like some kind of fox spirit. That was Riley's nickname—Fox—because she was clever and quick and somehow always three steps ahead of everyone socially. Riley, who had started following Maya on TikTok. Riley, who had commented 'cute hat' on Maya's story.
Riley climbed onto the dock beside her, water streaming down her arms. "I like your vibe tonight."
"My vibe?" Maya's voice squeaked. "I'm literally wearing a fox hat. To a lake party."
"Exactly," Riley grinned, and there was something wicked in it, something conspiratorial. "Everyone else is trying so hard to be cool. You're just... existing. It's giving main character energy, honestly."
Maya's chest did something complicated. "I'm not gonna swim though."
"So?" Riley shrugged. "We can sit here and make fun of how Jake thinks he knows how to dive." She gestured to where Jake was indeed failing dramatically. "Or we could walk down to the creek where it's shallow. No pressure."
The fox hat suddenly felt less like armor and more like... just a hat. A ridiculous, thrifted, perfect hat.
"Yeah," Maya said, surprising herself. "Let's do that."
As they walked away from the party, Riley slipped her hand into Maya's. The fox ears caught the moonlight, and Maya thought maybe, just maybe, she could learn to swim after all.
