Fox Hair Friday

Zoe stared at her bathroom mirror, the dye stain on her forehead matching the copper-red spreading through her formerly mouse-brown waves. Fox hair. That's what Maya had called the shade she'd spent three weeks obsessing over on Pinterest.

"You're literally a different person," her little brother Leo announced from the doorway, mouth full of cereal. "Mom's gonna freak."

"Shut up, Leo." Zoe flipped him off, but her stomach did that nervous flutter thing. Because yeah, she WAS different now. Fresh start, new vibe, no more sitting alone at lunch while her ex-best friend sat three tables over with the popular crowd.

The fox hair was her armor.

First period Monday, everyone stared. Like, ACTUALLY stared. Zoe kept waiting for someone to laugh, to point and whisper about how she was trying too hard, but instead this guy Caleb - actual Caleb from AP Bio - slid into the seat beside her.

"Sick hair," he said, all casual. "You look like... I don't know, like you've got stories."

Zoe's brain short-circuited. Stories? She spent 97% of her time overthinking texts and rewatching the same three Netflix shows. But she just said, "Thanks."

By lunch, her phone was blowing up. Maya wanted to know EVERYTHING. Was Zoe spying on her old friend group from across the cafeteria? (Maybe. Okay, yes.) Was she finally going to talk to Caleb? (She didn't know he EXISTED three weeks ago, this was moving so fast.)

Then came the cafeteria disaster.

Zoe was mid-laugh at something Caleb said - something ACTUALLY funny, not just polite-chuckle funny - when she felt Maya's eyes on her from two tables away. The sudden surge of I'm-being-watched panic made her choke on her spinach from the salad bar. She coughed, spinach everywhere, her fox hair probably looking like a copper bird's nest.

Caleb didn't even flinch. Just handed her a napkin like it was nothing.

"You good?"

"I'm SO sorry, this is humiliating-"

"Nah," he shrugged, grinning. "My little sister's obsessed with spinach. She puts it in smoothies. It's a whole thing."

And somehow they were laughing again. Later, Zoe would catch herself actually ENJOYING the feeling of being noticed. The fox hair wasn't armor anymore. It was just... hair. The real transformation wasn't in the mirror.
