Fox Hair, Don't Care
Maya stared at her reflection, finger-combing her frizzy curls for the hundredth time. The group chat was blowing up:
"Central picnic tomorrow. Who's coming?"
"Everyone. Be there or be square lol"
Maya's stomach did that familiar flip. She'd been crushing on Leo since seventh grade, and he'd finally noticed her existence. Kind of. He'd borrowed her pencil twice in math last week.
That's when she found the tutorial: "How to get that Fox Energy Hair." Not actual fox fur (gross), but that effortless, I-woke-up-like-this beachy waves look that all the popular girls had.
The regimen was intense. A cocktail of hair vitamins every morning—biotin, collagen, some neon orange pills that smelled like strawberries. Maya's mom had raised an eyebrow but bought them anyway, probably just grateful Maya wasn't asking for dyed blue hair like last semester.
Three weeks in, her hair was... longer? Shinier? Maya couldn't tell, but she *felt* different. More confident. More ready to make her move at the picnic.
Then came the disaster. She'd attempted to replicate the tutorial's overnight curl method. Woke up looking like a poodle. Her hair vitamins weren't helping. Nothing was helping.
Maya burst into tears, ready to bail on the picnic. That's when she saw it through her window—an actual fox, all red-brown and sleek, trotting across her backyard with a mouse in its mouth. The fox stopped, looked straight at her with zero effort, just being completely unapologetically itself, then vanished into the woods.
Something clicked. The fox wasn't trying to be anything. It just *was*.
Maya wiped her eyes. Went to the picnic with her poodle hair.
Leo was there, and he did notice her. "Whoa, your hair looks..." He paused. "Actually kind of cool? Like, really wild."
"Yeah," Maya said, surprising herself with a grin. "I'm going for fox energy."
He laughed, and for the first time, Maya didn't care about the vitamins or the tutorials or being anyone but herself. The fox hair, it turned out, was the one she'd had all along.
