Fox Hair Burning

Maya's **hair** hit her shoulders in the bathroom mirror. That morning, she'd chopped ten inches—just, like, grabbed the scissors and went full villain era. Now her copper curls stuck out everywhere, wild as static. Her mom would literally lose it.

First day of sophomore year at Brentwood, and she looked like a potato.

At lunch, someone's Insta story popped up—**padel** tryouts after school. Padel? Seriously? Maya had never held a racket in her life, but Tyler was gonna be there, and Tyler was the whole reason she'd even transferred here. Stupid, but real.

She spent fourth period **spying** on his profile again. Three years of posts, double-tapping every basketball pic, memorizing his dog's name (Bruno). She'd basically morphed into a creepy digital detective. Lowkey obsessed? Maybe. Fine, definitely.

"You coming?" Jenna asked at her locker, slinging a racket bag over one shoulder. "Tyler's bringing his squad."

Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like it was dropping through the floorboards. "Uh, yeah. Totally. I'll, like, be there."

**Running** to the courts, hair whipping her face, lungs screaming—she'd never run track, but she'd sprint anywhere for this. For him. For the chance to finally be seen.

She arrived sweating, pathetic, terrible. Everyone already looked like they belonged. Tyler stood near the fence, laughing with varsity girls whose hair fell perfect and straight and expensive.

"Maya?" Jenna waved her over. "You play?"

She didn't. She couldn't. But something in her—something stubborn, something reckless—said yes before her brain could veto it. The ball came flying. Her racket connected. HARD.

The ball hit the glass wall with a CRACK that silenced everyone.

Tyler looked over. Their eyes locked. For three whole seconds.

"Dayum," someone said. "Little **fox** got claws."

Her cheeks burned hotter than her hair. But for the first time, Tyler was looking at her. Really looking. And somehow, impossibly, she felt like maybe she could actually belong here.

Wild hair, bad serve, and all.
