Fox Hair, Bear Truth

The bathroom mirror reflected disaster. My hair, supposed to be sunset orange, looked like a traffic cone exploded on my head. Neo reached for another bleach packet. "Chill, Maya. We got this. Second round's the charm."

We'd been best friends since seventh grade, back when I still let my mom cut my bangs. Neo was the one who convinced me to try dyeing it for sophomore year. "New year, new you," they'd said. So far, new me looked like a cautionary tale.

"My mom's gonna kill me," I groaned, inspecting the patchy orange disaster. "This is a bear to fix."

Neo snorted. "That's not what 'bear' means, but valid." They squeezed more bleach. "Just bear with it. We're figuring it out."

We were supposed to be camping with friends this weekend. Now I'd be that girl with the tragic hair everyone lowkey judged. Neo's phone buzzed—group chat blowing up about the trip.

"They're asking where we are," Neo said, not looking up. "I told them we're running late. Figured we'd fix this first."

Something tightened in my chest. "You covered for me?"

"Duh. That's what friends do." Neo finally met my eyes in the mirror. "Besides, remember last year when I cut my own bangs and looked like a Toddler in a Tiara for a week? You didn't let me live that down, but you also didn't let anyone else roast me."

We rinsed my hair in the sink, dye swirling pink-orange down the drain. When I finally looked up, the patches had blended into something actually kind of cool—not perfect, but interesting. Wild, even. Like I'd tried something real.

"Damn," Neo said. "You actually look kinda fire."

We got to the campsite after sunset. Our friends were gathered around the fire, marshmallows burning. Nobody mentioned my hair until Kai, who I'd been crushing on forever, looked over.

"Whoa, Maya. Your hair..." They stepped closer, firelight flickering between us. "It's bold. I like it. You're kind of a fox, honestly."

My face burned hotter than the flames. Behind everyone, near the trees, an actual fox watched us, its tail flickering orange like my hair. For a second, our eyes locked, the fox and I both wild things pretending we belonged.

"Thanks," I managed, not caring that my voice shook. Neo caught my eye across the fire and grinned, bearing witness like they always had.

That night, lying in our tent, Neo whispered, "So, Kai called you a fox while an actual fox watched. The universe is weirdly specific with metaphors."

I laughed so hard I cried. "You think my hair's actually okay?"

"Maya," Neo said. "You're literally the only person who could mess up a dye job and still look iconic. Own it."

Maybe I would. Maybe being a fox meant being clever, adaptable, a little untamed. Maybe that wasn't so bad.
