Fox Fire at Midnight

Maya's phone buzzed with the group chat. "Halloween party at Tyler's. 8 PM. Dress code: mysterious AF."

She stared at her reflection. Sixth period had been a disaster—her lab partnerJordan had barely acknowledged her existence all week. One minute they're flirting over dissected frogs, the next she's invisible.

Her cat, Figaro, wound around her legs, demanding dinner. "You don't care about being ghosted, do you?" Maya sighed, scratching behind his ears.

The costume store had been picked clean, but she'd found a fox mask—copper and gold, with these wild eye holes that made everything look metallic and strange. It reminded her of something powerful, something that didn't apologize for taking up space.

When she arrived at Tyler's, the house thumped with bass. Through the smoky haze of the fog machine, she spotted him by the punch bowl: Jordan, dressed as some cheesy pharaoh thing, complete with a fake beard that was already peeling.

Their eyes met. Maya felt a surge of boldness that definitely wasn't hers. The fox mask gave her permission to be the person she secretly wanted—confident, unpredictable, not waiting around for some guy to decide if she was worth his time.

"Nice Sphinx costume," she said, sliding up beside him. "Very ancient, very mysterious. Very..."

"Maya?" Jordan squinted. "Is that you?"

The mask slipped down. She froze. This was it—the cringe moment where everything got awkward.

But Jordan just grinned. "I was hoping you'd come. I've been trying to talk to you all week, but you're always surrounded by friends."

The fox mask dangled from her fingers. "Oh."

"Yeah, oh." He stepped closer. "So... want to get out of here? There's this all-night diner down the street..."

Maya smiled, the real one this time. Sometimes you had to wear a mask to finally show your face.
