Fox Fire and Old Cables
Maya had spent three years burying her secret under drugstore brown dye, but today she was finally ready. Her natural hair—the color that made her grandma whisper about foxes and fire and old Hungarian curses—was coming out.
"You sure about this?" Riley asked, sprawled across Maya's bed while scrolling through TikTok. "Middle school was brutal about the 'fox' comments."
"I'm done hiding." Maya sectioned her hair, her fingers steady. "And besides, Jackson called me 'fox-red' yesterday, and honestly? I think he meant it as a compliment."
Riley sat up, dead silent. "Wait. JACKSON? The Jackson? As in, the Jackson who's literally never spoken to anyone outside his soccer clique until NOW?"
Maya's cheeks burned. She hadn't told anyone about their encounter in the school's old basement—him tangled in a mess of abandoned cables while fixing the projector for assembly, her pausing to help untangle the mess, twenty minutes of conversation about everything and nothing while their fingers brushed against frayed wires. How he'd looked at her hair (still brown then) and said, "I bet it's gorgeous underneath."
"He called you fox-red?" Riley repeated, like this changed everything. "Maya. That's not random. That's INTENTIONAL."
By 8 PM, Maya's hair blazed. She looked in the mirror and saw her grandma's eyes, her mom's cheekbones, and something entirely her own.
Her phone buzzed. Unknown number.
*Hey. Cable guy here. Heard through the grapevine you might be a redhead now?*
Maya stared at the screen. Her heart did this stupid fluttery thing.
*Fox fire,* she typed back. *And you're not the cable guy anymore.*
*Fair. But I still owe you for the projector incident. Coffee Saturday?*
Maya grinned at her reflection, her fingers grazing copper strands that caught the light like flame.
*Only if you don't call me 'fox.'*
*No promises,* he replied. *
But I might have to call you 'fire.'*
Riley watched from the doorway, smirking. "So... Saturday outfit planning?"
Maya's hair blazed like something finally ready to burn.
