Fox Eyes at Midnight

The bass thumped through Maya's chest like a second heartbeat as she stood against the wall at Tyler's house. She felt like a total zombie—three hours of sleep, AP Bio test that morning, and now her first real high school party stretching ahead of her like a terrifying, soda-stained abyss.

She'd almost talked herself out of coming fifteen times today. Who was she kidding? She wasn't party girl material. But Jordan had texted "plz come im dying without u" and somehow here she was, clutching her phone like a lifeline, wearing her favorite combat boots because they made her feel slightly less like throwing up.

Zombie mode activated. She'd been hovering near the snacks for twenty minutes, pretending to be super interested in a bag of Tostitos when really she was just trying not to look as alone as she felt. The air smelled like cheap body spray and something sweeter, something that made her think of Friday nights in movies where everything turns out okay.

Then she saw him. The fox.

Asher Chen. Senior. Track star. The guy everyone said was cute but also genuinely decent, which was basically unicorn-level rare in their school's ecosystem. He was laughing with some people near the back door, looking unfairly good in that effortless way some people had, like he'd just thrown on whatever and still somehow ended up looking like a model.

Maya's heart did this embarrassing little flutter thing. She'd been lowkey crushing on him since September, when he'd picked up her dropped books in the hall and said "no worries" with a smile that had fundamentally altered her brain chemistry. Not that she'd ever admit that to anyone, especially not Jordan, who would absolutely never let her live it down.

She was about to head for the bathroom to reset her entire nervous system, when the bull—that massive loud junior whose name she refused to learn on principle—shoved past her, spilling soda all over her favorite gray hoodie.

"Watch it," he muttered, not even looking back.

Maya froze. This was it. This was where she cried or got mad or stood up for herself like in the movies. But her throat locked up and she felt her eyes start to burn and—

A hand appeared out of nowhere. Asher. He was suddenly there, handing her napkins, giving the bull a look that could've frozen lava.

"Bro, apologize?" Asher said, voice flat. "Not cool."

The guy muttered something and shuffled away. Asher turned to Maya, eyes softening, and suddenly she was looking at him and he was looking at her and her brain was basically static.

"You okay?" he asked, like he actually cared, like this wasn't just politeness.

Maya nodded, unable to speak. Asher helped her clean up the soda, asked about her day, and somehow they ended up talking about AP Bio and track and his terrible coffee order like this was totally normal, like they did this every Friday.

"Black, no sugar," he said, making a face. "Don't judge me, I'm basically a zombie before noon. Survival mode."

Later, when Maya finally left the party, she walked home feeling different. Less invisible. More like someone who belonged in rooms like that. Her hoodie was still sticky, her feet hurt from standing too long, and she was absolutely going to regret staying up this late tomorrow when she had to function like a human being.

But she was smiling.

Her phone buzzed. Jordan: "DETAILS RIGHT NOW I SAW YOU WITH ASHER OMG"

Maya took off her hat as she climbed through her bedroom window, already planning to say she'd forgotten it somewhere, typing back: "tomorrow zombie mode engaged but yes. everything happened."

She fell asleep still smiling, feeling like maybe high school wouldn't be so scary after all. Maybe she was done staying on the sidelines. Maybe next time, she wouldn't wait for someone else to make the first move.
