Fox Creek Friday

The first Friday of junior year, Maya found herself at the edge of Fox Creek, where the cool kids supposedly partied. Her hair was frizzy from humidity, and she was regretting everything—especially letting Jen talk her into this.

"You're literally hiding behind a tree," Jen said, appearing behind her with two Solo cups. "Drink this. You need it."

Maya peeked around the oak. Kids were swimming in the creek, laughing like they didn't have a chemistry test Monday. That's when she saw him—Lucas from AP Calc, floating on his back, hair wet and messy, smiling at something someone said.

"He's been looking for you," Jen whispered.

Maya almost dropped her cup. "No way. He's literally friends with every popular person here. I'm just... background character energy."

Then Lucas spotted them. He swam to shore and walked over, dripping creek water, grinning like he'd known Maya forever.

"Hey! You're Maya from English, right?"

Her brain short-circuited. Lucas, the cute boy who sat two rows back, knew her name?

"Yeah," she managed.

"Cool," he said. "Wanna come swimming? The water's actually not gross."

Before she could process, a fox darted from the woods, sleek and russet, pausing near the creek bank. Everyone went quiet. The fox looked at them with knowing amber eyes, then vanished into the night.

"That was literally so random," someone said.

"Sign from the universe," Lucas joked. "Come on, Maya. Live a little."

Jen shoved her gently. "Go. I'll be here being emotionally supportive."

So Maya kicked off her sandals. The creek water was shockingly cold, but Lucas was right—it wasn't gross. The moon filtered through trees, and for the first time, she wasn't watching from the sidelines.

They ended up running through the woods later, shoes in hand, laughing at absolutely nothing. By midnight, Maya's hair was a disaster, her feet were muddy, and she'd made an actual friend who wasn't just using her for homework answers.

Sometimes the best nights start with hiding behind trees and end with fox magic and cold water and someone who sees you. Not the you you're supposed to be. Just you.
