Fox Courts & Papaya Dreams

Maya's hair refused to cooperate that morning. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to perfect the effortless waves everyone at school made look natural, but her curls had other plans. By the time she reached the padel courts, her brown frizz was doing its own thing, and she could feel the judgment radiating from the popular crowd.

"You coming?" Chloe called, already on the court with her perfect blonde ponytail bouncing. Maya gripped her racquet tighter. This was supposed to be her chance — tryouts for the varsity padel team, the one extracurricular that might actually make her visible at Northwood High.

Her phone buzzed. Her mom: *Don't forget Abuela's birthday dinner. Papaya salad is ready.*

Great. Now she had to bolt before the second round of tryouts. Her mom didn't get it — papaya salad wasn't exactly the cool factor Maya needed right now.

Game three. Maya was crushing it until Chloe's return shot sailed over the fence. Both girls chased after it, and there it was — a real fox, reddish-orange and impossibly still, watching them from behind the tennis shed.

"No way," Chloe breathed. "Is that...?"

The fox tilted its head, almost mocking, then vanished into the brush.

"Did we just hallucinate?" Maya asked, suddenly aware of how sweaty and messy she must look.

Chloe laughed, and for once, it didn't sound mean. "That was literally the most magical thing that's ever happened at this school. You have insane hair, by the way. I've been trying to get volume like that for years."

Maya blinked. "What?"

"Your hair. It's amazing. I thought you styled it that way on purpose."

Something shifted. "Oh. Thanks."

"Hey," Chloe said, suddenly interested. "What's that smell? Is that... papaya?"

"My mom made papaya salad for my grandma's birthday," Maya found herself saying. "It's actually really good if you don't knock it before you try it."

Chloe grinned. "I love papaya. My dad's from Miami. We should hang after tryouts."

Maya's heart did something weird. Maybe today wasn't a disaster after all.
