Fox Courts & Failed Friendships
The neon orange ball sailed over the mesh fence for the third time that morning. Maya groaned, wiping sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand.
"You're gripping it too tight," Sasha said, bouncing on her toes like she'd been playing padel since birth. Which, honestly, she practically had. Her dad owned the club.
"I'm literally trying," Maya muttered, acutely aware of the TikTok-worthy outfits Sasha's squad always wore — matching skorts and cropped tops that looked expensive even when sweaty. Maya's Walmart athletic gear screamed "I'm trying too hard."
A rustle in the bushes near the edge of the court made them both jump. A fox — sleek, rust-colored, with eyes that held zero fear — trotted into view, carrying something shiny in its mouth.
"No way!" Sasha whipped out her phone.
The fox paused, regarding them with what Maya swore was pure judgment, then vanished into the woods behind Court 4.
"Did you see his vibe?" Sasha laughed, suddenly sounding like a regular human instead of Padél Queen. "Total chaos energy."
Maya's stomach did that thing — the same flip-flop it did every time Sasha acted nice, making Maya question everything she'd assumed about the friend hierarchy. Sasha wasn't supposed to notice things like "vibes." She was supposed to be perfect and distant and occasionally acknowledge Maya's existence during lunch.
"Hey," Sasha said, spinning her padel racquet. "Wanna skip drills? There's a smoothie place down the street. My treat."
Maya's jaw nearly hit the court. "Wait, really?"
"Yeah." Sasha shrugged. "Besides, if you keep gripping that racquet like you're gonna murder it, you're gonna blister before next week's tournament."
They sat on the curb outside Club Padel, sharing an açaí bowl and talking about everything except padel. Maya learned Sasha hated her own nickname ("Sash" made her want to scream), had a secret obsession with true crime podcasts, and once cried because her cat looked at her with disappointment.
The fox reappeared briefly across the street, tail flicking, before disappearing into an alleyway.
"Chaos," Maya said.
"Maximum chaos," Sasha agreed. "See you tomorrow?"
"Yeah." Maya grinned. "But I'm still gonna suck at padel."
"Obviously." Sasha grinned back. "But at least you'll be a sucky friend who gets smoothies."
