Fox Court Summer

Maya's phone buzzed. *Want to hit the padel court later?* from Jordan. The same Jordan who'd barely spoken to her since seventh grade, before the friend group fracture that still made Maya's stomach twist.

She typed back *sure* before overthinking it. That was her problem—always reacting, never strategic. Her older sister called her 'fox' because she was too quick to trust, too eager to please. 'You gotta be sly, Maya. Protect yourself.'

At the courts, Jordan was already there, swinging a padel racket like he'd been born holding one. His ball cap was backwards, that effortless cool Maya could never pull off.

'You still playing?' Jordan asked, gesturing to the empty court beside him.

'Yeah. Why not.'

They played in comfortable silence until Jordan asked, 'Remember when we built that fox fort behind the school?'

Maya's racquet missed the ball entirely. 'That was sixth grade, Jordan.'

'I know. I was just thinking about it.' He shrugged, hitting a perfect shot off the glass wall. 'We called it Fox Den because we swore we saw one back there.'

'We never saw a fox,' Maya said, but she was smiling despite herself.

'Maybe we were the foxes,' Jordan said quietly. 'Sneaking around, thinking we were so clever.'

The padel ball bounced between them as something shifted—the awkwardness melting into something older, easier. A friend remembered, not lost.

'My sister still calls me Fox,' Maya admitted. 'Says I'm too quick to trust people.'

Jordan laughed. 'Yeah? Well, Fox, you want to grab tacos after this? There's this place—'

'Mayanachi,' they both said together.

The fox reference wasn't about being sly or cautious anymore. It was about showing up. About trusting that some things, like friendship, could circle back around.

Maya hit the ball back, grinning. 'Tacos sounds perfect.'
