Fox Court Prophet

Maya's heart hammered like she'd been running for miles, but really she'd just frozen at the padel court entrance. The Saturday morning sun glared off the glass backboards, and inside, the popular kids laughed like they owned the place. Including Ryan, whose smile made Maya's stomach do actual gymnastics.

"You coming or what?" Maya's little brother Kai called from the courts, already bouncing a ball like he'd been born holding a racquet. Their dad had signed them up for beginner lessons, which was humiliating enough without the entire junior varsity squad watching.

Maya stepped onto the court, her generic store-brand paddle feeling like a toy compared to their fancy ones. Water sloshed in her bottle—she'd chugged half of it just to stop her hands from shaking. "Whatever," she muttered, adjusting her cropped jersey that suddenly felt totally wrong. "It's just a game."

First serve: directly into the net. The popular kids snickered. Maya's face burned hotter than July pavement.

Then something moved beyond the fence—a flash of copper near the creek. A fox, sleek and unconcerned, sat on the bank watching them through the chain-link. Its amber eyes locked onto Maya's.

"Yo, is that...?" Ryan pointed, and suddenly everyone stopped laughing. The fox dipped its head in what Maya swore was a nod, then trotted away like it had somewhere better to be.

"That was SO cinematic," one of the girls said, genuinely impressed. "Like, main character energy."

Ryan grinned at Maya. "Cool you got a shout-out from the local wildlife."

Something shifted in Maya's chest—the tight ball of anxiety loosening. Whatever happened next, at least she'd have this story. She adjusted her grip on the paddle. "Okay. Let's go."
