Fox Court Confidential
Maya stood by the padel court, clutching her water bottle like a lifeline. The humidity was already frizzing her curls, but that wasn't why her heart hammered against her ribs.
Across the net, Jake was laughing with the popular girls, effortlessly sliding around the court like he owned it. Maya's best friend, Chloe, elbowed her. "You're literally staring again. Creepy vibes."
"I'm not staring," Maya lied. "I'm... observing. Like a spy gathering intel."
"You're not James Bond," Chloe said, but her eyes softened. "Just talk to him, dude. He plays padel every Tuesday. It's not rocket science."
Easy for Chloe to say. She was the type of cat who landed on her feet—socially graceful, never awkward. Maya felt more like a raccoon digging through trash for acceptance.
Their game ended, and Jake's group walked past. Maya opened her mouth to say something—anything cool—but her throat went dry. She chugged her water instead, nearly choking.
"Smooth," Chloe whispered, but she was grinning.
Later, as they walked home along the wooded trail near the courts, something rustled in the bushes. A fox—red coat gleaming in the sunset light—stepped onto the path. It froze, watching them with intelligent, golden eyes.
"Whoa," Maya breathed.
"Fox," Chloe said, but she wasn't looking at the animal. She was looking at Maya. "You okay? You've been weird all week."
Maya sank onto a bench. The fox vanished silently into the underbrush, leaving them alone with the fading light. "I just... I feel like everyone knows something I don't. Like there's this social manual I never got."
Chloe sat beside her. "We're all faking it, Maya. Even Jake. I heard he got a C on his English paper and tried to convince his teacher it was a 'bold stylistic choice.'"
Maya laughed, surprised. "Really?"
"Scout's honor." Chloe bumped her shoulder. "Next Tuesday, you're talking to him. I'll be your wingman. Or wing-cat. Whatever."
"Deal," Maya said, and for the first time, her future felt less like a mystery and more like an adventure she was actually ready for.
