Fox Court Break
Maya's cat Luna watched with those judging eyes as Maya stuffed her padel racket into her backpack. Again.
"You're going, right?" her mom called from the kitchen. "I made you a vitamin smoothie! It'll help with energy!"
Maya grabbed the smoothie, dreading what came next. Padel practice with the Fox Club. At her school, "the Fox" was Chloe — the girl who somehow made everything look effortless while Maya struggled just to exist without tripping over her own feet.
The bull in the school logo glared at her from the gym wall as she walked in. Great. Even the mascot was judging her.
"There she is!" Chloe called, waving her racket like she owned the court. "Ready to get crushed?"
Maya's stomach did that thing it always did around popular kids. The I-don't-belong-here thing.
But then something weird happened. During drills, Chloe kept messing up. Her usually perfect backhand went everywhere but where she aimed. She muttered something about "stupid new vitamins" making her feel weird.
Maya's turn came. She hit the ball, expecting it to fail like everything else she did socially.
Instead: perfect shot. Corner pocket. Chloe's eyes went wide.
"Since when do you play like that?"
Maya shrugged. "Since... now?"
They played a match. Chloe was off her game. Maya was on fire. Every shot felt right, like she'd been hiding this ability forever, waiting for someone to actually see her.
"You're not terrible," Chloe said afterward, which was basically high praise coming from her. "You wanna hang after practice? My cat just had kittens."
Maya almost said no. Almost retreated to her room with Luna and her usual overthinking routine.
Instead: "Sure."
Turns out, the Fox wasn't so scary when you got close. Turns out, most people were just winging it, hoping nobody noticed their own awkwardness.
That night, Luna head-butted Maya's hand like she knew something had shifted. Maya took her vitamin without being asked. Some days, you just needed to believe in your own hype — even if you were the only one who knew it was real yet.
