Fox Court

The padel court at the rec center was supposed to be neutral territory, but Maya's stomach did backflips anyway. She and Chloe had been besties since sixth grade, inseparable through braces drama and first-period emergencies and that time they both failed algebra. Now? Three weeks of ghosted texts and 'so busy' excuses, all because Chloe had joined the popular crowd that hung out at the country club pool while Maya was stuck in honors band with her second-hand racket.

'You ready?' Chloe called from the other side of the court. She looked effortless in her matching athleisure set, while Maya felt like a discount store advertisement in her gym shorts and faded middle school t-shirt.

Maya gripped her racket tighter. 'Born ready.' Her voice squeaked. Smooth.

They played in silence at first, the thwack of the ball against the glass walls filling the awkward space between them. Maya's thoughts spiraled—maybe this was it, maybe they'd officially graduated to those people who only spoke at graduation parties with fake enthusiasm.

Then she saw it.

A fox, orange-red and impossibly fluffy, sat just beyond the fence, watching them. Its golden eyes followed every volley, head tilting with each serve. Maya froze mid-swing.

'You seeing this?' she whispered.

Chloe turned, and her face lit up like she used to when they'd sneak out at midnight for Taco Bell runs. 'No way! It's literally so cute!'

They approached the fence slowly. The fox didn't run. It just sat there, tail wrapped neatly around its paws, like it was judging their technique.

'He's better than my ex,' Chloe cracked, and Maya laughed so hard she snorted. Just like that, they were back.

They spent the next hour sitting cross-legged by the fence, forgetting the game entirely. The fox watched them talk about everything—Chloe's pressure to fit in with her new crowd, Maya's insecurity about being the scholarship kid, how much they'd missed each other.

'We should do this again,' Maya said finally. 'Padel, I mean. Without the cool kids watching.'

Chloe nodded. 'Every Tuesday. And you can finally teach me how you beat Josh Springs last year.'

The fox stood, stretched, and trotted away like its job was done. Maya watched it go, feeling lighter than she had in weeks. Sometimes friendship just needed a little reminder—or maybe a really adorable woodland creature referee.
