Fox Code

Maya's bedroom was her sanctuary, the only place where the cable TV's static hum couldn't reach her parents' arguments in the living room. At sixteen, she'd learned to disappear into screens.

"Fox is AFK," read the chat on her monitor. That was her—Fox, quick and cunning, nobody's pushover. Online, she led raids and roasted trolls. In real life? She was just Maya, who sat alone at lunch and whose voice cracked when she got nervous.

The window rattled. A streak of orange fur bolted across her desk—Luna, the neighbor's cat, who'd discovered Maya's unlatched window sometime last month.

"Dude, not during the stream!" Maya whispered, scrambling to catch the cat before it knocked over her RGB setup. Luna purred, completely unbothered, batting at the webcam cable.

Her Discord pinged. hey fox, u coming to jason's party tonight?

Maya stared at the message. Jason. The guy she'd been crushing on since September, the one who somehow made the whole cafeteria go quiet when he walked in. She'd been Ghost_ online for years before reinventing herself as Fox—confident, sharp, untouchable. Maybe Fox could go to that party.

Luna curled up on her keyboard, tail flicking. The cable from her headset lay tangled around the cat's neck like a crooked halo.

"You're literally the worst roommate," Maya told the cat, but softened when Luna chirped back.

Her phone buzzed again. u there fox??

Maya looked at the orange furball, at her screen with the streaming lights, at the reflection of herself—dark circles under her eyes, hoodie three days too unwashed. Fox was armor. But armor was heavy.

"Screw it," she said, typing back. yeah im coming. this is maya tho. fox is just my gamertag.

Send.

Her heart hammered. Luna headbutted her hand, purring like a tiny motor. Outside, the cable box from the street pole flickered, its red eye winking in the dusk.

Maybe tomorrow she'd figure out who she was—Fox or Maya or someone in between. But tonight, she was going to a party. And that felt like enough.
