Fox Behind the Dugout
Marcus's mom had packed him another spinach wrap, the green leaves practically screaming 'I'm trying too hard' through the plastic wrap. He shoved it to the bottom of his backpack like contraband. Freshman year was hard enough without being the kid whose lunch looked like something from a wellness influencer's TikTok.
Baseball tryouts were in twenty minutes, and his stomach was doing full somersaults. The varsity team — the social royalty of Northwood High — would be watching. Well, Jackson would be watching. Everyone watched Jackson.
Marcus slipped behind the dugout to practice his swing, bat slicing through the humid afternoon air. That's when he saw it: a fox, copper coat gleaming like it had been polished by the sun, sitting on the pitching mound like it owned the place.
Their eyes locked. The fox tilted its head, almost mocking him.
'You gonna stare all day, or you gonna swing?' Marcus muttered, mostly to himself, but the fox's ears twitched like it understood.
Something about those amber eyes — unbothered, completely self-possessed — made Marcus's chest loosen. This creature wasn't trying to impress anyone. It just *was*.
He pulled out the spinach wrap, took a defiant bite. Earthy. Crunchy. Actually not terrible. The fox watched, unimpressed but somehow approving.
When Jackson called out Marcus's name during tryouts twenty minutes later, he didn't choke. He didn't try to channel some version of himself he thought they wanted. He stepped up to the plate, green from the spinach still in his teeth, and swung like he belonged there — like a fox on a mound, like nothing in the world could touch him.
The crack of the bat echoed perfect and sure. He didn't need to be someone else. He just needed to be the guy who'd shared a moment with a fox behind the dugout, the guy who ate spinach wraps without apology, the guy who could swing like his life depended on it because sometimes, it felt like it did.
Jackson nodded. Respect. Real respect.
Marcus grinned, a tiny leaf of spinach stuck in his teeth like a badge of honor.
