Fox at the Top of the Pyramid

Maya's first day at Crestwood High felt like swimming upstream without a floatie. The social hierarchy here wasn't just unspoken—it was practically carved into the cafeteria walls. At the top? The popular kids, perched like royalty. At the bottom? Everyone else, frantically trying to climb.

"You okay?" asked Riley, the only person who'd spoken to her all morning. Riley had kind eyes and a dimple that appeared when she smiled. Maybe a potential friend?

"Just figuring out where I fit," Maya admitted.

Riley leaned in. "Word of advice? Stay away from Harper. She's a fox—charming, but she'll eat you alive."

Great. Maya had already accidentally sat next to Harper in homeroom. Harper, with her perfect winged eyeliner and effortless confidence, had looked Maya up and down like she was evaluating merchandise.

Fourth period gym changed everything. Coach announced tryouts for the new padel team. Maya had played back at her old school—her dad's obsession, not hers, but she'd picked up some skills.

Harper was there, naturally, holding court like she owned the court. "I hope you're not trying out," she said when Maya grabbed a racket. "This is a serious team."

The challenge hung in the air. Something in Maya snapped. She spun, slammed a serve that sailed perfectly into the corner. Harper's expression flickered—just for a second.

"Not bad," Harper conceded slowly.

By the end of tryouts, Maya had taken Harper's spot on the starting lineup. The social pyramid had flipped upside down.

Later, Harper found her by the lockers. "You're actually good," she said, dropping the queen bee act for the first time. "Want to practice after school?"

Riley caught Maya's eye from down the hall, warning written all over her face. But Maya saw something different in Harper's expression—loneliness behind the practiced smile.

Maybe that's the thing about pyramids. The person at the top has the farthest to fall.

"Sure," Maya said. "But no mind games. Just padel."

Harper actually laughed. "Deal."

And just like that, Maya wasn't swimming anymore. She was building her own raft.
