Fox at the Pool's Edge

The pool party was supposed to be my chance to finally fit in. You know, after months of being the quiet kid who sat at the back of the cafeteria. But there I was, hovering near the snack table like I'd forgotten how to human, clutching my vitamin water like it was some kind of social shield.

"Hey! You actually came!" It was Chloe, dripping pool water and confidence. "Austin was about to leave. You should come swimming."

I mumbled something about forgetting my suit, which was total BS because my swimsuit was practically burning a hole in my bag under the chair. My heart was doing that thing where it forgets its job and tries to escape through my throat.

Then everything got weird.

A fox—like, an actual fox—trotted out from behind the garage. Not some majestic creature from a nature documentary, but this scrawny, anxious-looking fox that kept glancing around like it knew it wasn't supposed to be there. It froze when everyone noticed.

The whole party went silent. Then my service dog, Buster, who'd been sleeping near my chair, stood up and let out this soft, confused woof. The fox's eyes locked onto mine, and I swear to god, I felt seen. Like, really seen. Not by the popular kids or my crush or anyone I'd been trying to impress all summer. Just this fox who looked as out of place as I felt.

"Is that..." someone whispered.

The fox bolted, vanishing as quickly as it appeared. Everyone started talking at once, some people pulling out phones, others freaking out about whether it was dangerous. But I just stood there, finally breathing.

"You okay?" Chloe asked.

"Yeah," I said, and it wasn't even a lie. "Yeah, I'm good." I kicked off my flip-flops. The pool looked perfect, rippling under the string lights. And for the first time all night, I didn't feel like I was faking it.

Sometimes the weirdest moments are the ones that make everything else click.
