Fox at the Pool Party

Jordan adjusted the strap of her bright orange bikini top for the third time, feeling like a traffic cone amid a sea of cool pastels. The pool party at Tyler's house was supposed to be the last blast before sophomore year started, and somehow Jordan had managed to score an invite. But standing there in her two-piece that screamed for attention, she wondered if she'd made a huge mistake.

Her phone buzzed. "u coming??" from Maya, her best friend who was already cannonballing into the deep end.

"yeah," Jordan typed back, though her feet felt glued to the concrete patio.

That's when she saw it—a flash of russet fur near the fence line. A fox. An actual fox, trotting through Tyler's backyard like it owned the place, its tail flicking with the confidence Jordan wished she had.

The fox paused, amber eyes locking with hers. In that moment, Jordan felt weirdly seen. This creature didn't care about fitting in or who was watching. It just *was*.

"Yo, Jordan! You gonna stand there all day?" It was Tyler, dripping wet and grinning.

The fox vanished beneath the deck, but something shifted inside Jordan. She slipped off her flip-flops and marched toward the pool, orange bikini and all. The water felt shocking and perfect.

Later, floating on her back and watching the sunset turn everything golden, Jordan's fingers brushed something in the water—a hair tie, the same bright orange as her swimsuit. Some other girl's confident accessory, lost and found.

She held it up, water dripping from her fingers. "Anyone lose this?"

A girl with the coolest teal hair she'd ever seen swam over. "That's mine! You're a lifesaver."

Jordan smiled, realizing that sometimes the things that make you stand out—the orange bikinis, the teal hair, the moments when you feel like a fox in the backyard—they're exactly what connect you to your people.
