Fox at the Pool Party

Maya pulled her hat lower, the brim shielding her eyes like a force field. She felt like a total zombie—third night in a row staying up until 3 AM scrolling through Alex's profile. Stupid. He probably didn't even know she existed.

The pool party was already chaotic. Tyler had cannonballed into the water, sending a wave soaking three sophomores who shrieked like they'd been stabbed. Classic Tyler.

"You're not swimming?" Alex's voice behind her. Maya's heart did that embarrassing flutter thing.

"Not feeling it," she mumbled, adjusting her hat.

He sat beside her, dripping wet. "You look like a sphinx. All mysterious and silent."

Maya almost laughed. "A sphinx? Really?"

"What, sphinxes aren't cool? They guard secrets and stuff. Riddle me this, Maya." He nudged her shoulder. "Why are you hiding under that hat?"

Her face burned. But then she noticed it—Alex's phone lock screen. A fox. Not a majestic wildlife photo, but that stupid meme fox with the "What does the fox say?" caption.

"Is that... seriously your wallpaper?" she asked.

Alex grinned, unbothered. "Judge me all you want. Foxes are chaotic little weirdos. They're literally me."

Something shifted. The zombie fog lifted.

"Foxes steal food and cause problems," Maya said. "Accurate."

"Exactly. Hey, you coming in? Tyler says he's gonna do a backflip off the diving board. It's gonna be a disaster." He stood up, holding out a hand.

Maya looked at the water, then at Alex's outstretched hand, then at her hated hat. She took it off and dropped it on the chair.

"Fine. But if Tyler drowns, we're laughing."

Alex's smile was worth it. "Deal."

She jumped in, hat left behind, feeling entirely too alive for someone running on zero sleep.
