Fox at the Pool Party
Maya's heart was literally **running** a marathon before she even arrived at Jessica's house. The invitation had said "pool party" which meant swimsuit, which meant exposing the arms she'd been hiding in oversized hoodies since seventh grade. The giant inflatable **pool** glowed with those fancy underwater lights Jessica's rich parents probably didn't think twice about buying. Everyone was already there — the popular crew doing cannonballs, the nerdy kids huddled by the snacks, the weird tension between groups that only high school could manufacture.
Maya considered making a break for it. She could fake a stomach bug. Say her mom called. Just dip. Then she saw it — a sleek orange **fox** trotting along the back fence, like it owned the place. It stopped, watching her with those intelligent amber eyes, head tilted like it was judging her hesitation.
"Yo, you coming in or what?" Tyler called out, dripping wet. He was that kind of cute where you hated yourself for noticing. "Water's actually decent today."
The fox vanished into the darkness, leaving Maya with a choice: keep hiding or dive in. She'd spent so much time running from things — from the teasing in middle school, from the locker room whispers, from her own reflection. But this fox, this random wild animal living its best life behind a suburban mansion, didn't seem to care who was watching. It just existed.
Maya dropped her towel. Took a breath. And cannonballed into the deep end, resurfacing to Tyler's genuine laugh and Jessica handing her a soda like she'd been there all along. The water was cold, the moment was terrifying, and for the first time in forever, Maya didn't want to run away from it.
