Fox at the Pool Party
The pool party was supposed to be Lucas's chance to finally make his move on Maya, but instead he was hiding behind the snack table, nursing a flat soda and questioning every life choice that led to this moment. Across the yard, Maya laughed at something Tyler said—of course Tyler, with his perfect hair and varsity jacket—while Lucas remained stuck in the friend zone since seventh grade.
Then he saw it: a flash of orange near the garden fence. A fox, sleek and impossibly bold, darting between the bushes. Lucas grabbed his phone, suddenly grateful for an excuse to escape the social pressure.
"What are you doing?" Maya appeared beside him, making him jump.
"Fox," he managed, pointing. "There's a fox."
Her eyes widened. "No way."
They crept toward the fence together, and for the first time all night, the awkwardness faded. The fox reappeared, carrying something in its mouth—Karen's prize-winning **goldfish**, presumably liberated from the backyard pond.
"Is that..." Maya whispered, trying not to laugh. "Is that stealing a fish?"
"Pretty sure, yeah."
They watched in fascinated horror as the fox deposited the flopping goldfish into someone's abandoned solo cup, then paused to regard them with what looked distinctly like a challenge.
"We should tell Karen," Lucas said, but he didn't move.
"Or," Maya grinned, "we could blame it on Tyler."
The laugh escaped before Lucas could stop it. They sat there on the grass, watching the fox trot away with its suspiciously light solo cup, while Karen's voice rang out from the patio: "WHERE IS MY GOLDFISH?!"
"You know," Maya said, leaning close enough that Lucas's heart stopped, "this is way more fun than swimming."
Maybe pool parties weren't so terrible after all.
